Andrew Phillips

Dr. Phillips is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders at Harvard Medical School and an Associate Biophysicist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

He completed his PhD in physics at the University of Sydney in 2009, where he developed a mathematical model of neural circuits thought to regulate sleep.

This model is now widely used for sleep and performance predictions in other research groups and has been extended to include circadian rhythms and environmental effects, including light and pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Phillips’ current research directions include the long-term effects of chronic sleep restriction on cognition, the physiological basis for inter-individual and inter-species differences in sleep patterns, and effects of social interactions and electronic devices on sleep and circadian rhythms.
